CENTRAL ASIA 2008
VARIANT ADVENTURE - CENTRAL ASIA 2008

This was the beginning. We decided to travel from Poland to China on wheels. Why? Because nobody in Poland had ever done it before. Eighteen people left (and came back!): 4 off Road cars and 5 motorbikes. We travelled 17 500 km – Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, , Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine. Unfortunately, we never drove into China – during the Olympics the Uygur separatists carried out bomb attacks, so the Chinese authorities declared a state of emergency. We had to leave our vehicles on the Chinese border and postpone the trip around the Taklamakan Desert (we went back there 2 years later!).

The arrival itself to Central Asia was both a challenge and an adventure. On the other hand, blazing a trail through Pamir, Tien-Shan and Karaoram was spectacular. The wilderness of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are every offroader’s dream. Towering mountains, pure lakes and creeks, infinite wilds, nomadic shepherds, oriental bazaars – all European desires since Marco Polo’s times. Our cars and motorbikes had done a surprisingly great job, as the oldest one was…23 years old.

We did not go there to gain fame, but our photoblog (www.variant-adventure.pl) has been visited by over half a million web surfers.  However, as soon as the expedition began, we knew that this was merely  the beginning…

Details are on the blog (but only in Polish ;).
